Jaron's World: The Meaning of Metaphor
Here's a fascinating question that can never be asked scientifically: What is the nature of consciousness? No experiment can even show that consciousness exists (see my June 2006 column to be reminded why). Fortunately, there are ways to get closer and closer to this impossible topic. For instance, it is possible to ask what meaning is, even if we cannot ask about the experience of meaning.V. S. Ramachandran, a neuroscientist at the University of California at San Diego and the Salk Institute, has come up with a research program to approach the question of meaning with remarkable concreteness. Like many of the best scientists, Rama (as he is known to his colleagues) is engaged in an extension of his childhood curiosities. When he was 11, he wondered about the digestive system of the Venus flytrap, the carnivorous plant.
Do you have or have seen a carnivorous plant?
It's true, carnivorous plants do not exist only in movie theaters and cartoons, they're real and are here to stay! (If we let them)Most of the carnivorous plants are passive, they have some big pending "sacs" or a kind of "glue" in their leafs, that captures the insets that walk by. Other kind of plants, like the Venus Flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) is active, waiting patiently that some distracted but walks into its trap that is then quickly closed to avoid any escapees. They are not the easiest plants to maintain, but surely are some of the funniest to watch! Especially the Dionaea muscipula;P at this time I only have one Venus Flytrap, but hopefully in next spring I'll be growing some more. So, what is your experience with this kind of plants? Don't hesitate to ask questions!
do you like going to SPAs?
I love going to SPAs. It is so relaxing and rejuvenating. Although I do not go as often as I like, mainly because of financial reasons, I still cherish the times when I was able to go. Because of my love for SPAs, this TIME magazine (10/6/08) article about A SPA THAT SLITHERS caught my attention. Instinctively, I read through the article and it got me fascinated. I mean, you've heard about SPAs that use chocolate, mud, seasalt, hot rocks and all those other common things. But have you heard of a SPA that uses SNAKES? Yep, you read it right snakes. Here is an excerpt from that article that I want to share with you so that you'll read on your own what I am talking about.(written by: Tim McGirk and Talmei Elazar) Most SPAs have names that conjure up an atmosphere of bliss and tranquility. So I am a little taken aback by the sign outside the SPA in the orange groves of northern Israel. It reads, ADA BARAK'S CARNIVOROUS PLANT FARM. Barak makes most of her income by showing off her plants, which eat everything from insects to reptiles to small mammals and schnitzel. She started grabbing one of the little snakes slithering in and out of the hungry plants' jaw and passing it around...
Venus Flytrap!!! Plant? or pet?
[b][em]thumbup[/em]Venus Flytrap: Carnivorous plant (eats meat)*** The Venus Flytrap’s leaf can snap shut in less than a second but is limited to the number of times it can do this during its life span. Rumor has it that it can only open seven times during its whole life!*** Digestion of a single insect can take up to two weeks before it re-opens. One Venus Flytrap eats about a handful of flies each month.*** They can live underwater for months so there are many ways to set up your terrarium. Don't forget to feed it insects that have died of natural causes or you will kill your plant. Yes, you can use the flyswatter to produce a chemical-free meal! It's best to feed your plant fresh kill.*** They are thought to reproduce by either cross pollination or self pollination but is currently unknown as to which. They are usually found in bogs such as the ones found in North and South Carolina.*** At best, your plant will grow to a size of about 12 centimeters. They don't get anywhere near as big as the ones we've all seen on The Rocky Horror Picture Show.*** Never, ever fertilize your Venus Flytrap or feed it high fat content like hamburger. You'll kill it immediately!*** Venus...
Meat eating plant
A new species of giant carnivorous plant has been discovered in the highlands of the central Philippines. The pitcher plant is among the largest of all pitchers and is so big that it can catch rats as well as insects in its leafy trap. During the same expedition, botanists also came across strange pink ferns and blue mushrooms they could not identify. The botanists have named the pitcher plant after British natural history broadcaster David Attenborough.
